Christmas for Chandrika, like for all business owners, is meticulously planned months in advance. During this period, time seems to stretch; instead of weeks, Christmas feels just around the corner due to all the preparations that need to be made. The numerous Christmas shows she attends require ultra-organization, so she has to temper her excitement. Often feeling exhausted from the many events that take priority, the numerous preparations for her home are often left until the last minute. This year, Chandrika decided to prioritize her family and has booked an early “decorate the house” day on the 25th and 26th of October, knowing that if she doesn’t do it then, it won’t happen until Christmas Eve.
The shows do offer a great opportunity for her to catch up with other exhibitors and to explore what her colleagues are selling; perhaps picking up some new tableware for Christmas day or gifts for friends. At the end of each hectic day, she might have a cheeky drink behind her stand with other exhibitors, which provides a nice opportunity to chat and unwind. Although it’s a busy time of year business-wise, the sensory delights of twinkling lights, decorations, and the smoky scents of Christmas candles evoke a sense of happiness and celebration. She loves the festive season—the joy, the cheerful rhythm of people revelling, and having music playing in the background while cooking a tasty meal for her family, taking in both the comforting smells of the food and the ambient music.
This year is slightly different. The last couple of years have been tough for everyone, and with Christmas cancelled last year, she has decided to fully embrace the Christmas spirit, have fun, and enjoy the season. Getting tasks ticked off her list gives her a sense of accomplishment. She has designed the decoration of her boutique window, which will feature an elegant display of silk flowers, and will supervise a photoshoot of her gorgeous dog Ollie dressed in baubles and his special leather bow. After the dust has settled and the shows are finished, she will host a special pre-Christmas dinner for her friends and coworkers to express her gratitude for their help and support over the last twelve months. Her creative processes don’t stop, though; after Christmas day, she will redirect her focus to her exciting projects for 2022.
