There is a saying that a business is like a child, something you nurture, guide, and pour your heart into. But for me, it isn’t just a saying; it is my reality. My business is woven into my life, just as a child is to a mother. Motherhood is more than raising a child; it is shaping a future with love, care, and dedication. In many ways, running a business is no different.
From the moment an idea comes to life, it demands attention, effort, and dedication. My business feels like my child. I think about it when I wake up and before I sleep. It’s become my passion, my journey, my everyday existence. I’ve watched it evolve from a delicate thought into something strong, I take great pride in it. Like motherhood, running a small business is full of milestones, the first step, the first breakthrough, and the moment you realise that all your hard work is starting to pay off. But, just like raising a child, it also brings sleepless nights, tough decisions, and sacrifices. You pour everything into it, hoping that, one day, it will stand proudly on its own.
This journey has never been mine alone. My children and husband have been part of it from the very beginning. When I was a wedding dress designer, my two boys were with me, threading needles, pinning fabric, and watching me build a dream with my hands. They saw the late nights, the hard work, and the persistence. Even as children, they were part of it, learning through experience.
When I started my fragrance business, my youngest, Zak, was just a baby. He grew up alongside it, placing labels on bottles with tiny fingers, attending events, and even helping research fragrance notes. He wasn’t just watching; he was learning. And as he grew, so did his role, helping with the business, offering opinions, and sometimes, with the confidence of a young entrepreneur, giving his own little sales pitch.
Now, my children continue to stand beside me, watching, helping, and growing with this business. It is a part of them, just as much as it is a part of me. And I know they are just as proud.
A child needs nourishment, education, and support to grow strong. A business is no different. It requires the right tools, the right knowledge, and the right people surrounding it. It demands patience, resilience, and a belief that it will flourish.
Of course, not every day is easy. Just like parenting, business ownership comes with struggles, exhaustion, frustration, and self-doubt. But then come the moments of joy, the milestones, the breakthroughs, the realisation that something you built with your own hands is thriving. These moments make every challenge worthwhile.
That is why I continue. Because just like a mother watching her child grow into something incredible, I look at my business and see not just a company, but a life I have nurtured, a journey I have embraced, and a future I believe in.
As mothers, we don’t just raise children; we raise dreams, build futures, and create legacies. We teach by doing, and by showing our children what resilience, dedication, and passion look like. Our efforts extend beyond our families and into the worlds we create through our work.
So, this Mother’s Day, I celebrate every mother who is not just nurturing a family but also nurturing a vision, who wakes up every day, pouring love into something bigger than herself.
Because like a child, a business is not just something you own, it is something you love, something you grow with, and something that becomes a part of you forever.
Happy Mother’s Day to the creators, the nurturers, and the builders. 💛
